Missions we Support

CANADA: Presbytery of Halifax-Lunenburg

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Grace Presbyterian Church in Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia. The children who attended last summer’s vacation bible school began raising money to support a Gifts of Change project in Malawi.

Rev. Sara Macavei-Katocz writes, “It was amazing to see children bringing in coins and bigger paper bills. One small five-year-old boy asked his parents if he could take money from his monthly allowance, saved to buy model cars. He chose a $20 bill. When he was told that this was quite a large sum, one that would buy him many cars, he was simply very pleased that he was in the position to offer such a lot of support to needy children. What a blessing to lead little children in the service and worship of the Lord!”

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Winnipeg Inner City Missions (WICM). WICM is located in what is said to be one of the toughest neighbourhoods in Canada, where crime and violence in the streets is escalating. Within this environment, WICM operates a weekly food bank and thrift store, provides employment training and transitional housing and distributes emergency food, personal hygiene supplies, bedding and towels to those who need them.

Executive Director Rev. Margaret Mullin writes, “Providing for people’s basic survival needs puts us in contact with many people in need. As we get to know them and they learn to trust us, we get invited into their lives.” Let us pray for WICM as it provides light and hope to people in inner-city Winnipeg.

CANADA: Presbytery of Montreal

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Action Réfugiés Montréal (ARM) which works in solidarity with refugees and refugee claimants in downtown Montreal. Glynis Williams, the ministry’s Director, says “We all want to feel that we belong somewhere.” Marguerite, a refugee from Burundi who received help from ARM, says “Coming to Canada, I found a family.” Let us pray for ARM and the vital ministry it is providing to refugees in Montreal.

Haiti earthquake appeal

A massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, the capital of impoverished Haiti on Tuesday, causing widespread death and destruction and leaving relief workers scrambling to pull people from the rubble.

Over three million people are estimated to have been affected by the powerful quake, leaving homes and schools in ruins, destroying infrastructure and trapping people in the debris. The city is without electricity and the telephone network has broken down. The UN headquarters has collapsed and people are sitting in the streets with nowhere to go. While a full assessment is still ongoing, thousands are estimated dead with millions of dollars of damage.

PWS&D Responds

PWS&D is responding to this emergency situation through the Action by Churches Together Alliance. ACT staff on the ground are carrying out assessments of damage and the needs of survivors. While international aid is being flown in, ACT has been working on the ground from the moment the earthquake occurred. ACT is planning to send a rapid support team of at least a response coordinator, a communicator, two water and sanitation experts and a finance expert. ACT members are also preparing to send water and sanitation materials, hygiene kits, and psychosocial workers to the devastated area.

You Can Help

The people of Haiti need your prayers and financial support to bring hope and relief. Congregations and individuals are encouraged to bring help to the situation by making a donation to PWS&D. She writes, “Mission visits help people witness the wonderful faith and joy of Christians in the synod, and awaken people to the realities faced by everyday people in one of the world’s poorest countries.”

Let us pray for Glenn and Linda as they continue this important work with our partner church in Malawi.

CANADA: Presbytery of West Toronto

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support University Presbyterian Church, located in the Jane-Finch community of north-western Toronto. It is a very diverse neighbourhood, with one of the highest proportions of youth, sole-supported families, refugees, immigrants and public housing tenants of any community in Toronto.

UPC’s Mission Group has developed a “Reaching Up” ministry that provides free academic and art programs for school-aged children each day of the week. The ministry consists of a homework centre, music school, and youth mentoring program. Rev. Thomas Kim says that “University Presbyterian Church has become a ‘good news community’ where members and friends worship God, encourage one another, grow in Christ’s image and share the good news with Christian love.” The congregation is growing so much that a second service was added in April.

Let us pray for the vibrant and exciting ministry at University Presbyterian Church.

Flodan Ministry in Ghana – in memory of Florence Osabu-kle

Mrs. Florence Osabu-Kle, a humble and dedicated Christian. She loved and lived by the Beatitudes.

In 1973, Florence and her husband founded the non-denominational Universal Christian Prayer Group (UCPG) dedicated to humanitarian work in Ghana. In recognition of her initiative, the school was named after Florence and Daniel, hence Flodan International Academy. she played an active role in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and of Canada.

At the Erskine Presbyterian Church of Ottawa, she was an elder and helped with the children’s Sunday service. In 2007, she went to Ghana to serve at the school which was dear to her. She returned to Canada in July 2008. Florence passed away convinced that with God’s grace the works that were dear to her will continue.

May she rest in peace.

Churches warn of social collapse amid financial crisis

18 March, 2009: Warsaw: Hungarian church leaders have warned that their country faces violence and breakdown in the face of unemployment and dislocation brought by the current financial meltdown. “We were already in bad shape before this global crisis, and we are now affected more deeply than other countries in our region”, explained the Rev. Balazs Odor, ecumenical officer of the Reformed Church in Hungary, which comprises about one fifth of the country’s 9.9 million citizens.

Mission: CANADA - Presbytery of Hamilton

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing . . . support McMaster Campus Ministries in Hamilton, Ontario. A committed Catholic, Kim expanded her horizons as she learned from the ecumenical and collegial environment at the Chaplaincy Centre. She made lasting friendships as she helped facilitate a discussion group, and volunteered with chapel services and exam hospitality. She has begun a Master of Divinity program. They have then gone on to lead courses for over 17,000 community AIDS educators who in tern create awareness about HIV and AIDS within the church and community. Courses are also being held to educate ministers on the PCEA’s policy on HIV/AIDS.
